More and better training in the car industry

Portugal's Mangualde municipality is commited to the DRIVES project.

As part of the European project for the automotive industry of the future, DRIVES (Development and Research on Innovative Vocational Education Skills), the municipality of Mangualde is committed to training and education. Mangualde is the only Portuguese municipality to integrate this project, which is scheduled to run until 2022.

Its goal, according to the Mangualde local authorities, is to create “a group of skills aimed at car manufacturing, industry providing, sales and after-sales services”.

Elísio Oliveira, Vice President of Mangualde’s City Council, explains that this is “a clear investment in the development and qualification of our workerforce and human resources. It is a motion of confidence in our industrial fabric”.

In Mangualde, the car industry has been around for over 60 years thanks to the PSA group.

In recent years, new companies, connected with car factories, have emerged in this council and have been manufacturing car components.

Within its 4 million euros budget, DRIVES invests around 600 thousand euros in Portugal, through a joint venture created by the Mangualude City Council. This venture includes the Metallurgical Industrials Association (Associação dos Industriais Metalúrgicos), the Portuguese Metalworkers and Others Association (Metalomecânicos e Afins de Portugal), the Antolín Group, the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu, the University of Minho, among others.

The project comprises 24 partners from 11 different countries: Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Hungary, Spain, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Italy, Poland, Romania, Austria and Portugal. It is aimed at higher education students, young people in vocational training and individuals searching professional requalification (whether they are unemplyed or not). Companies themselves have specialised training.
